Cambridge Sports Tours (CSTs): 2024 Annual Review

Writer's picture: Nigel FennerNigel Fenner

Cambridge Sports Tours, through 17 x walking tours and 12 x talks, reached over 500 people in 2024.

The walking tours were delivered to U3A, the Cricket Society, the Rotary Club, Friends of Mill Road Cemetery, Learning Leaders, Open Cambridge, the Cambridge University Alumni Festival and the ‘Friends of Cambridge Sports Tours’, now numbering nearly 500.

The talks / presentations were delivered to a range of local community groups including Local History Societies, the WI, Rotary, and a Care Home. Since 2018 CSTS has given talks to over 30 different local groups.

Most popular topics in 2024 were those focussing on Frank Fenner (more than the creator of Fenner’s Cricket Ground) x 12 walks and tours, 7 on Cambridge’s sporting revolution, 3 on the history of local football, 3 on the origins of play, and 1 event each on boxing, muscular Christianity, women and the Olympic Games. This last event included a visit to the hugely successful ‘Paris – 1924’ exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum.

‘Cambridge Sport: in Fenner’s Hands’, published in 2023 by CSTs was awarded Book of the Year Award 2024 by Cambridgeshire Association for Local History. It sold over 100 copies in 2024 so that only 130 copies of the 1st Edition remain.

An application by CSTs for a Blue Plaque to be placed on Cambridge Market, as the location where the Marquess of Queensberry rules of boxing were first fought for, was rejected. A modified application will be submitted in 2025.

Plans for 2025 include continuing with talks and tours that have been successful, such as those that focus on Frank Fenner, the history of football etc, and those delivered as part of U3A and Open Cambridge. New ideas include working collaboratively with other key individuals / organisations.

IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR A TOPIC TO BE DELIVERED AS EITHER A WALK OR TALK – please get in touch by posting a comment against this post – thanks.
